Lawrence County shuts out Storm in first-round clash (High School Sports ~ 07/02/14)
Lawrence County rained on the Marshall County Storm's parade on Friday night, as the Wildcats rolled to an 11-0 victory in six innings at Sam Davis Park in the first round of the 13-year old Babe Ruth District 8 tournament behind a dominant pitching performance from starting hurler Spencer Tidwell. Effectively mixing his curveball with an overpowering fastball, Tidwell kept the Storm off balance at the plate the entire contest and came within one out of recording a perfect game, as he yielded just one hit in six scoreless innings of work while issuing no walks and recording five strikeouts. -
South Williamson tops Tomahawks (High School Sports ~ 07/02/14)
Home field advantage proved to be a nonfactor for the Marshall County Tomahawks, as they lost 6-2 to the South Williamson Red Hawks in their opening game of the 14-year old Babe Ruth District 8 tournament at Jonathan D. Hollingsworth Memorial Park. South Williamson grabbed the momentum early and built a 4-0 lead through the first three and a half innings of play. Marshall County plated two runs in the bottom of the fourth to slice the deficit to 4-2, but the Red Hawks held the Tomahawks scoreless the rest of the way while tacking on two insurance runs to advance in the winner's bracket. -
Giles County knocks off Tomahawks in 14s tourney (High School Sports ~ 07/02/14)
On Saturday night, the Marshall County Tomahawks were eliminated from the 14-year old Babe Ruth District 8 tournament when they dropped an 8-5 decision to Giles County in the second round of the losers bracket at Jonathan D. Hollingsworth Memorial Park. After falling into an early 6-1 hole, the Tomahawks battled back and sliced the deficit to 6-5 in the top of the fifth inning. Giles County, however, managed to keep Marshall County at bay and tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth before relief pitcher Blade Matthews held the Tomahawks scoreless over the final two frames. -
Tomahawks fight back, down Columbia in tourney (High School Sports ~ 07/02/14)
After losing 6-2 to South Williamson in their opening game of the 14-year old Babe Ruth District 8 tournament, the Marshall County Tomahawks bounced back by defeating Columbia 22-11 in the first round of the losers bracket on Friday night in Lewisburg. The Tomahawks actually trailed 3-2 through the first three innings of play, but overwhelmed Columbia after that point, as they exploded for 18 runs over the next three frames to forge a 20-3 advantage before cruising to the blowout victory. -
Stars shine bright, win title (High School Sports ~ 07/02/14)
The Marshall County 15-year old All-Stars turned in a super nova performance Monday night, capping off a clean sweep of the Babe Ruth District 8 Tournament with a 17-2 run-rule win over Giles County in the title game. "I'm really proud of the guys, they played great ball the entire tournament," said head coach Mike Bailey. "They hit the ball hard all over the park, our goal is to hit the ball hard every time up and they did that all tournament, up and down the lineup. We got good pitching and defense as well, but I tell them all the time teams will quit if you hit the ball all over the park and that's what we've done the entire tournament and I just hope we can carry that on to the state." -
MC hammers first two tourney foes (High School Sports ~ 07/02/14)
On Friday night in Columbia, the Marshall County 15-year old all-stars opened up the Babe Ruth District 8 Tournament with a big 21-7 win over the host squad from Maury County and on Saturday, head Coach Mike Bailey's boys blasted longtime foe Giles County 16-1 in four innings. Marshall County fell behind 3-1 in Friday night's opener before a five-run third inning put them ahead for good. Maury County would cut the lead to 8-5 in the bottom of the fifth, but Marshall County scored seven runs in the sixth and crossed home plate six more times in the seventh inning to complete the blowout win.
