Dallas Green, who managed Phillies to 1st title, dies at 82
(Professional Sports ~ 03/24/17)
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — As a big league pitcher, Dallas Green was pretty mediocre. "I was a 20-game winner," he would joke, "it just took me five years to do it." Instead, it was in another role where the imposing, 6-foot-5 Green really made noise. "When you think of big, with that deep voice, that booming voice, he could hold a team meeting, boy, he could scare you right out of your seat," Cleveland manager Terry Francona recalled.

The Cornersville Bulldogs and Mt. Pleasant Tigers were set to end the two-game series on Tuesday night, but Mother Nature had other plans, forcing games across the Mid-State to be canceled behind a powerful set of storms pushing across Tennessee. When the action resumed on Wednesday night at Mt. Pleasant, the Tigers looked like a different team that lost 12-2 against the Bulldogs on Monday, leading 1-0 until the fifth inning and taking a tie into the seventh before Cornersville tacked on three runs to get the 4-1 win. -
Rockets bunt to squeeze out a win over Eagles (High School Sports ~ 03/24/17)
Executing the little stuff in a baseball games usually results in a victory. The Forrest Rockets proved the age old adage, playing an almost flawless game Wednesday night at Chapel Hill to capture an exciting 1-0 win over District 9A rival Eagleville. A Jaylen Smith suicide squeeze bunt with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning was the final little thing Forrest did right to secure the win. “I was thinking because I went 0-for-3 the first three times, I was destined to get a hit the fourth time,” Smith said. “Coach told me that we were going to see what he did the first pitch and we were going to do the squeeze the second pitch.” -
Rockets win 13 inning marathon at Eagleville (High School Sports ~ 03/24/17)
After a 1-0 battle won by Forrest on Tuesday at Chapel Hill, the Rockets traveled to Eagleville to make up a game postponed from Monday and it turned into a war as the two District 9A rivals clashed for 13 innings before Forrest came out on top 4-2. “I don’t know what you can say about that, it’s like this game right here if you win, you should get two district wins,” Forrest coach Bart Joyce said. “It’s just two great ball teams that didn’t want to give up.” “Luckily, we scratched a couple of runs across in the top of the thirteenth to get the job done.” -
The Old Man - Old Black Dog (Outdoors ~ 03/24/17)
Old Black Dog The Old Man had worked the ducks wonderfully for the last two minutes. He had turned the twenty some-odd birds when they were nothing more than steadily moving dots against a red sunburst dawn. Circling first in a high watchful pattern, they had then settled into a purposeful flight path arching directly into the sixty-four carefully placed decoys... -

Happy 75th birthday to Capitol Records!
(Editorial ~ 03/24/17)
In the peak years of my scouring yard sales and junk shops for second-hand, dollar-bin vinyl record albums, I didn’t really focus on company labels. I paid more attention to genres and artists. Still, it’s only fitting that I now shine the spotlight on a single company, since I learned that Capitol Records (the first major West Coast record company) celebrates its 75th anniversary on March 27...

Russian Roulette: DNC emails hacked by own Muslim IT employee?
(Editorial ~ 03/24/17)
I feel like I’m living in some parallel universe. The news media, the Democrats, and even some Republicans continue to beat the drum of some sort of collusion between Trump and the Russians. What if I told you that neither the FBI nor any other intelligence agency had ever inspected the DNC servers that were supposedly hacked? That would be front-page news, right? It’s true. FBI Director James Comey confirmed it in testimony in January and again this week before the House Intelligence Committee...
