Cornersville ran up against an old foe on Wednesday as the Lady Bulldogs took on Columbia Academy with the chance to advance to the championship in 11A. Despite losing to CA by just one run in the first meeting and four runs in the final regular season meeting, the contest belonged to the private school from Maury County as the Bulldogs run-ruled Cornersville by a 10-0 final in just five innings at Mt. Tigerettes’ season ends in 1-0 loss at Pulaski (High School Sports ~ 05/12/17)
The Marshall County Tigerettes faced a do-or-die situation at Giles County Tuesday night in a District 12AA Tournament loser’s bracket game and it went down to the wire as the Lady Bobcats eked a 1-0 win to end Lewisburg’s season. “They (Giles County) have played light’s out defense against us all year,” MCHS coach Heather Denton said. “I feel like we never get a lucky play in the game---they get diving catches on line drives, ankle catches, so I knew we would have to hit and to win the ballgame and we didn’t.” Marlee Woodward fought like a warrior in the circle for the Tigerettes, giving up one earned and four hits, while striking out one and walking none in the complete game effort. -
Bulldogs take down GCA in D11A tourney (High School Sports ~ 05/12/17)
The Bulldogs faced a win or go home situation on Monday night with a game against Grace Christian-Franklin, a team the Bulldogs fell to twice during the regular season by a combined four runs. The Bulldogs roared back from a 2-0 deficit in the fourth inning to take a 7-2 lead into the seventh before escaping with a 7-5 nail biter to advance to the final round of the loser's bracket versus Richland for a chance to play in the championship. "We were leaving guys on early," Bulldog coach Ben Putnam said. "We were getting guys on all night long but leaving them on. We finally found some ways to get them in. Wasn't always how you draw it up, but we were able to scratch them across and that was the difference in the game." -

The Bulldogs fell behind 3-2 in the third inning, but came alive to score eight runs over the next three innings to take out a Raider squad 10-5 that had beaten Cornersville by four combined runs in the two regular season contests. -

Warner walk off clinches 9A title for dominant Lady Rockets (High School Sports ~ 05/12/17)
The Forrest Lady Rockets completed a clean sweep of the District 9A Tournament Thursday night at the Field of Dreams in Chapel Hill with the final stroke coming on a two-run, walk off homerun by Carson Warner that capped off an 11-0 five-inning, run-rule win over Community. “It took us a while to get adjusted because we had been geared up for faster pitching and they brought in a pitcher that was a little slower and it always takes us a little while to get adjusted, so once we settled in and got a little more patient we got the job done,” Forrest coach Becky Cheatham said. “I’m really proud of Carson for getting that homerun to end the game, that was very exciting and I’m very happy for her.” -
The Old Man
(Outdoors ~ 05/12/17)
The Old Man was ready. He felt comfortable sitting against the massive fallen oak and the old double-barreled shotgun was rock-steady, resting softly on the moss that covered the fallen tree. It would not be long now. Only seconds before he had heard the turkey leave the tree in its fearless descent to the calling hen below. The morning birds were singing loudly and the Old Man’s heart beat faster and...

Bike stunts: Are they safe for your teen?
(Editorial ~ 05/12/17)
Even before I read the May 4 Wall Street Journal, I knew a little something about adventurous bicycle-related activities. When I was a teenager, a neighbor kid (one of my brother’s classmates) rode over to the house for a visit. Before saying goodbye, he confided that he had always wondered what it would feel like to ride with a flat tire; so he plunged his pocket knife into his tires and went THUMP THUMP THUMP back home...

Trump might not be the failure you thought (Editorial ~ 05/12/17)
Ask the New York Times and they’ll tell you President Trump has been an abject failure in his first 100 days or so. Ask Trump and he’ll tell you he’s a “yuge” success. So, which is it? It depends on how you’re keeping score. If you’re scoring by how many presidential memoranda and executive orders have been written, Trump beats Obama 51-49... -
