Marshall County all-stars hoping for historic run (Community Sports ~ 07/14/17)
When the 15-year old Marshall County all-stars man their positions on the diamond Saturday afternoon on the Jonathan D. Hollingsworth Field in Lewisburg for the Babe Ruth State Tournament they will be chasing history. The winner of the three-team event will automatically qualify for the Babe Ruth World Series at Lawrenceburg on August 10. No Marshall County all-star team has ever played in a Babe Ruth World Series. Lawrenceburg and Martin are the only two Tennessee Babe Ruth Leagues to host a World Series in any division and no team from the Volunteer State has won the event since 1996 when the Nashville 16-18 year old all-stars claimed the title at Dare County, NC. -
Dust in the flowers
(Features ~ 07/14/17)
Dear Heloise: I have artificial flowers that have gotten a bit DUSTY over time, and I want to clean them rather than replace them. They were expensive, and the colors perfectly match my home, so how do I clean them? -- Meg H., Gastonia, N.C. Meg, pour 2 cups of regular table salt into a clear plastic bag. ...

New Medicare Cards Debut Next Year
(Features ~ 07/14/17)
Dear Savvy Senior, I just received my Medicare card in the mail and was surprised to see that the ID number is the same as my Social Security number. I know it’s a bad idea to carry around anything that displays my Social Security number because it makes me vulnerable to identity theft. Wasn’t the government supposed to stop putting Social Security numbers on Medicare cards?...

The Old Man
(Outdoors ~ 07/14/17)
Donald Stockton loosened his tie and scooted back from the long table. He glanced at his watch. His time was okay. It was still two hours before the meeting across town.... The microphone clicked at the podium in front of the tables, and the indiscernible talking in the room automatically lowered to sporadic whispers. As Thomas Lipscombe adjusted the mic, the hundred or so people became quiet...

Our Altar
(Column ~ 07/14/17)
“We have an altar, whereof they have no right to eat which serve the tabernacle.” – Hebrews 13:10 A huge blessing that Christian leaders rarely mention is that of the New Testament altar. Yet, every Sunday morning at the end of most church services we hear the echoes of an altar call. ...

NASA, NOAA, EPA fraudulently fudge climate data
(Editorial ~ 07/14/17)
There’s a new peer-reviewed study that’s completely being ignored by the mainstream media. It shows that “nearly all” of the global warming reported by NASA, NOAA, and the Met Office in the UK is due to fudging numbers. The report is titled “On the Validity of NOAA, NASA and Hadley CRU Global Average Surface Temperature Data and the Validity of EPA’s CO2 Endangerment Finding.” That last part is in reference to the Obama EPA using global warming to wreak havoc on industry and our economy...

Jury duty: honor or agony?
(Editorial ~ 07/14/17)
“Ask not what you can do for your country; ask if that really persistent hangnail qualifies you to deep-six the summons.” – JFK’s evil twin. My 3-month stint in the circuit court jury pool has ended without my actually getting picked for a jury, and I’m deeply disappointed...

Things are very, very bad for Donald Trump
(Editorial ~ 07/14/17)
President Donald Trump took to Twitter on Tuesday to call his son, Don Jr., now surely the Fredo Trumpleone of America’s ruling clan, a “great person who loves his country.” That may well be true. I don’t pretend to have any insight into what is in Trump the Younger’s Heart. There should be a baseline assumption that all Americans are, to some extent or another, patriotic...
