Tigers fall late at Pearl-Cohn (High School Sports ~ 09/27/17)
To be the best you have to beat the best and Marshall County put that theory to the test on Friday night with a trip inside the heart of north Nashville against perennial state powerhouse Pearl-Cohn (4-2). For a brief moment, the Tigers looked to have pulled of the near impossible of beating the Firebirds on homecoming when Marshall County quarterback Bryce Wallace hit wide receiver Devon Wilson on a 15-yard slant pass for a touchdown with 2:16 remaining in the fourth quarter for a 24-21 lead. -

After last week’s 20-12 loss at Moore County dropped Cornersville Middle School (CMS) to an even 3-3 on the season, the Bulldogs came up big for Homecoming with a 28-14 come from behind win over Blanche Thursday night at Frog Bottom. “We didn’t really know what the game plan was going to be because we had never seen them before, we didn’t even know what color uniforms they had,” CMS coach Ray Stocstill said. “They really gave us a good battle and it was a hard fought game and you could say that both teams had an opportunity to win because of how hard they played.” -

Looking back, mom regrets children’s unhappy childhood
(Features ~ 09/27/17)
DEAR ABBY: I got pregnant very young and married the father. It was in the ‘60s and things were very different then. I didn’t realize my husband simply did not like children. I attributed it to his being in the Marines, a Vietnam vet, etc. We had never heard of PTSD, but he probably had it. We struggled, and he was very abusive to the children, even when they were small...

Spending other people’s money
(Editorial ~ 09/27/17)
I can’t blame them, really. It’s human nature to want something for nothing. I speak of two tenants who recently moved into a rental unit I own. I made the mistake of renting the unit for one flat rate that included “free” utilities. Since the tenants didn’t have to pay directly for their electricity usage, they cranked the air conditioner day and night. There was no incentive for them to turn it off when they were at work during the day or away for the weekend...

Fumbling the name game
(Editorial ~ 09/27/17)
Sports talk used to be so easy. Guys named Mickey, Hank and Barry hit the long balls. Joe, Brett and Tom tossed the touchdowns. But now, “That guy on the Marlins who’s hitting all the homers, what’s his name? Giovanni something?” With enormous patience my son explains for the tenth time, “You mean Giancarlo Stanton.”...

(Editorial ~ 09/27/17)
Two essays this week, by two very different authors, take us deep into the tribalism that marks our politics. Both should serve as a wake-up call for what we risk losing as a culture - as a nation - if we fail to reconcile our differences and heal long-festering national wounds...
