FMS crushes Liberty in Homecoming rout (High School Sports ~ 10/04/17)
The FMS Rockets (6-1) secured a spot in the Duck River Valley Conference title game with a big 44-6 homecoming win Thursday night at Murrey E. Holton Field in Chapel Hill. “It was a big win for us, it was a crazy week with homecoming and a lot of activities, but we won and that’s the main thing,” Forrest coach Corey Searcy said. -
Rocket misfires lead to fifth straight loss (High School Sports ~ 10/04/17)
Are you sure there wasn’t a full moon shining over Chapel Hill Friday night? It seemed like it in a weird game as the Rockets turned the ball over seven times and had two false start penalties deep in the opponent’s territory that prevented them from scoring, yet they still had a chance to upset region leading Lewis County (7-0, 4-0). “Same old story,” Forrest coach Brent Johns said. “It would be hard to beat anybody with seven turnovers, especially the first place team in the region.” But in the end, the Rockets’ misfires were just too much to overcome as the seventh-ranked Wildcats escaped Murrey E. Holton Field with a 21-7 win, extending Forrest’s losing streak to five games. -
Tigers pound Wildcats in Thursday night special (High School Sports ~ 10/04/17)
Following an emotional, last minute loss in Nashville last Friday to Pearl-Cohn, a Thursday night contest against a fading Lawrence County (2-5, 0-3) squad was just what the doctor ordered for Marshall County (4-2, 3-0). In a game that featured little drama, the Tigers jumped out to a 21-0 halftime edge and got the younger players lots of reps in the second half as the leaders in 4-4A cruised to a 59-0 win. "I was proud that we took care of business on a short week," Tiger coach Thomas Osteen stated. "I was very happy we started the game fast. I love the fact that we created four turnovers on defense and blocked a punt." "In addition we had zero turnovers on offense," Osteen continued. "Anytime you can be plus four in the turnover margin you are going to give yourself a great chance to win." -
Bulldogs one win from region title (High School Sports ~ 10/04/17)
Any lingering questions as to whether the Cornersville Bulldogs were true contenders and a legitimate threat to make a run at the 1A title were answered emphatically Friday during a primetime showdown against seventh-ranked Fayetteville (5-2, 3-2). The Tigers, in just its fourth year competing in varsity football, had compiled a 14-2 region record the past two years and have made at least the second round of the TSSAA playoffs in three of its four years of existence with a quarterfinal appearance in its first year. -

DEAR ABBY: I am in a long-distance relationship with a man who lives halfway across the country. Because he’s very wealthy, he arranges for all the airfare. I am a single mother and I have limited finances. “Bruce” owns a successful business and, through his business, racks up millions of credit card points. He never pays out of pocket for any vacation expenses -- hotels, car, airfare, cruises, etc...

All politics, all the time?
(Editorial ~ 10/04/17)
“It’s everywhere you turn these days. I can’t take it anymore.” “Ah, yes, you speak of a regrettable fact of modern life - that politics is in our face everywhere we go, even in professional sports.” “Professional sports always provided a respite from the worries of the real world. It was the one area where I could always escape the stress and strain of politics, which has gotten pretty ugly in recent years.”...

Sick of the NFL? Play Kaepernick-Hole (Editorial ~ 10/04/17)
Every time NFL players take a knee during the national anthem, they pierce the hearts of patriotic Americans and military families, including mine. I absolutely love football and my Dallas Cowboys. No longer. I haven’t burned my Cowboys sweatshirt yet, but I am close, which would make my husband happy because he’s a Redskins fan. But, if mine goes, his goes, too... -
Facebook is the new Big Brother
(Editorial ~ 10/04/17)
You’re putting your life at risk, one like at a time Facebook’s fairly recent slog into transparency reveals some rather nasty big-brother surveillance of their users. It’s always been a given that a service provider who does not directly charge customers can only pay the bills and employees if they’re being subsidized, either by the government, advertising or leasing access to their clients’ information...
