Warner stars in FMS comeback over LMS (High School Sports ~ 10/11/17)
Forrest Middle School and Lewisburg Middle School met in an intra-county rivalry Thursday night in Chapel Hill and after trailing early, the Rockets came back for a big 32-18 win. “It was a great game, it was fun and that’s what you play for, games like that,” FMS coach Corey Searcy said. “It showed a lot of character by our guys and more than anything, it shows what our workout program is all about---I think that’s what won the game.” -
Tigerettes’ season ends at Page (High School Sports ~ 10/11/17)
Heading into the District 11-AA Soccer Tournament with no wins within the conference, the MCHS Tigerettes had the unenviable task of taking on first place Page on Thursday night, just over a month after the Patriots beat Marshall County 9-0 on an early mercy-rule contest. But one of Marshall County coach Mark Redferrin's stronger points is being able to implement a strong playoff plan as evidenced by a near upset against Spring Hill (1-0) in 2016. -
Second half surge carries Tigers over Bobcats (High School Sports ~ 10/11/17)
For the first time in a long time, the Marshall County Tigers (5-2) and Bobcats met in the regular season with no region title hopes on the line as the Bobcats (4-3) dropped down to 3A for the 2017 season. But region game or not, when Marshall and Giles get together in any sport the game will be intense and the stands will be packed as the two longtime rivals sit just under 24 miles apart down US 31-A. -
Rockets pound Loretto on senior night (High School Sports ~ 10/11/17)
The Forrest Rockets (2-6, 2-3) broke a three-game losing streak and remained in the Region 6/2A playoff race via a big 56-26 win over Loretto (2-5, 0-3) on Senior Night Friday at Murrey E. Holton Field in Chapel Hill. “That was a great, great, great way to send these seniors out,” Forrest coach Brent Johns said. “They are a good senior class and they needed that tonight.” The Rockets can clinch a berth in the postseason with a win at Community on October 27. -
Bulldogs claim first ever region title (High School Sports ~ 10/11/17)
Even without the services of two suspended seniors on the defensive line and an injured Eli Woodard, the Cornersville Bulldogs walloped Richland 56-20 Friday night in Frog Bottom to capture the school’s first-ever region title. “Honestly, it feels awesome, but for different reasons,” Cornersville coach Gerard Randolph said. “I am so proud and happy for this group of young men that were able to accomplish this goal this year. I can't take all the credit for this region championship. I have a really good coaching staff that works very hard, and a football team that works very hard also.” -

Man’s devotion to his family leaves girlfriend feeling lonely
(Features ~ 10/11/17)
DEAR ABBY: My boyfriend and I just moved in together. We have been a couple for seven years. Until now, we have lived with our parents. I knew moving in would be a struggle for him because he’s very close to his four siblings. Now that we’ve moved in, he calls and video chats with them every day, visits twice a week or more and has sleepovers. He also leaves work early to take his siblings on field trips or attend their sports events...

The United States of Anxiety
(Editorial ~ 10/11/17)
What happened last weekend in Las Vegas is not, in the strictest sense, a Second Amendment issue. It is symptomatic of something deeper. There is little doubt that if more restrictive laws were in place to limit the sale of certain types of weapons, as well as devices that increase their lethality, the terror unleashed may have been less devastating...

Since Playboy founder Hugh Hefner’s recent death, a variety of voices have been calling him everything from a cultural icon and innovator to, according to New York Times columnist Ross Douthat, “wicked,” a “chauvinist” and “a pornographer.” “Hef the vanquisher of puritanism, Hef the political progressive, Hef the great businessman and all the rest,” writes Douthat. ...
