LMS Tigerettes let first win slip away (High School Sports ~ 12/15/17)
The Lewisburg Middle School Tigerettes game into Monday night’s game at Whitthorne Middle School without a win in 2017, but the last time the two squads squared up the loss was a close one. The Tigerettes (0-11) looked ready to finally add one in the win column by taking a 20-12 lead into the final quarter, but Whitthorne outscored LMS 20-7 in the final frame to take the win in heartbreaking fashion, 32-27. -
LMS Tigers complete season sweep over Whitthorne (High School Sports ~ 12/15/17)
The Lewisburg Middle School boys squad hit a late-season winning streak to end the 2016-17 regular season before taking an 11-point loss in the state tournament at Middle Tennessee Christian, and started out this season with two more losses before things turned back around. Many of the players that helped spur the late season resurgence last season have become leaders on one of the hottest teams in the MidState as the Tigers won eight straight coming into Monday night’s game against Whitthorne. -
Bulldogs get revenge on Hawks (High School Sports ~ 12/15/17)
The Bulldogs came into Tuesday night's game against Hampshire (1-6) riding a five-game losing streak but a 29-point loss versus Zion Christian non-withstanding, Cornersville has been in every single loss including a two-point loss at Hampshire last week and a five-point loss at Mount Pleasant in which the Bulldogs held a double-digit lead late into the game. Cornersville coach Matt Hagan has been waiting for his team to mold into one unit and finally got his wish with a 60-41 statement win against the Hawks. -
Lady Bulldogs crush Hampshire (High School Sports ~ 12/15/17)
On December 7, 2012 the Lady Bulldogs beat Columbia Academy 48-13, on January 13, 2009 they pummeled Culleoka 48-10, and on November 20, 2001 Cornersville blasted Zion Christian 81-9. But not since 2006 when Cornersville beat Culleoka 57-7 have the Lady Bulldogs held an opponent to as few points as in the 56-8 win over Hampshire on Tuesday night. -
Hollingsworth guns down Lady Lions (High School Sports ~ 12/15/17)
On Friday night, Huntland caged up Leah Hollingsworth, holding her to just two free throws. Tuesday the Tigerette senior shooting guard broke out in a big way, scoring a game-high 30 points, including all seven of Marshall County’s 3-pointers in a 50-34 win over archrival Columbia Central at Dottie Kelso Memorial Gymnasium in Lewisburg. -
Tigers beat Columbia in wild finish (High School Sports ~ 12/15/17)
arshall County coach Lavon King coached at Moore County for a longtime and was part of many rivalry games in the Lynchburg area, but what he witnessed Tuesday night was a classic Lewisburg versus Columbia battle to the finish. “It was huge and I was really proud of the kids,” King said. “They worked hard all week as far as getting prepared for this game, they did a good job and I’m just happy I got these guys.” -

FMS comeback secures title berth (High School Sports ~ 12/15/17)
After a one year drought, the FMS Rockets are back in the Duck River Valley Conference Tournament (DRVC) title game thanks to a gutty performance Thursday night at Unionville in the tournament semifinals versus Fayetteville. The Rockets trailed at the end of every quarter except the one that mattered when they came back with an inspired fourth quarter to beat the Tigers 28-22. “That’s what they have been doing all year,” said Forrest alum Jacob Daughrity, who has been coaching the Rockets as head coach Randy Toombs does double duty with the high school. -
Spivey disqualified from Senate race

Like or hate the Republican tax-reform plan, here’s one thing we can all cheer: Beer taxes are going down. According to Business Insider, Senate Republicans included an amendment to their tax plan that “reduces craft brewers’ excise tax from $7 per barrel to just $3.50 per barrel on their first 60,000 barrels... The amendment would also cut excise taxes for bigger brewers from $18 a barrel to $16 a barrel.”... -
