Yost playing a part in Belmont’s success (College Sports ~ 03/02/18)
When the name Forrest Lady Rockets is mentioned around the Mid-State, the first thing that comes to mind is the rural school's powerhouse softball program. But the hardwood product is not too shabby either. Longtime Rocket fans will remember the 1995 team that sent the entire starting five off the college on athletic scholarships, including Reagan Housch, who set 3-point shooting records at Columbus State or 2001 graduate Jessica Ezell, who started as a freshman on an Austin Peay squad that went to the NCAA tournament and later finished at Martin Methodist College. -
Knights knock out Tigers (High School Sports ~ 03/02/18)
Class 2A Tennessee Secondary Schools Athletic Association’s Mr. Basketball finalist KJ Johnson put on show for the packed house in the Region 6-AA semifinals at Nolensville Tuesday night, fighting off double and triple teams by the Knights’ defense to score a game-high 43 points, but it wasn’t enough in a season-ending 72-64 loss for Marshall County (22-10). “I told the guys after the game that I appreciated all their hard work and they left it all out there on the floor,” first-year Marshall County coach Lavon King said. “That’s all I can ask as a coach.” -

Heavenly love, misunderstood
(Editorial ~ 03/02/18)
“For whom the Lord loves He chastens, and scourges every son whom He receives.” Hebrews 12:6 Over the past few generations the belief of parental love has been redefined as giving a child what they want, when they want it. Therefore correction is seen as a lack of love or even abuse. However, our scripture teaches that the Lord’s chastening and corrective hand upon His children is a firm hand of parental love and not punishment...

Where to start? Fix the budget process
(Editorial ~ 03/02/18)
You could choose any number of marquee dilemmas to illustrate how broken congressional politics has become. Guns, Russian interference, climate change — Americans want progress on all of them and get little from Capitol Hill. But to my mind, nothing illustrates the dire state of our politics better than how we act on the federal budget...

America’s farmers: they work doubly hard for the money (Editorial ~ 03/02/18)
In my 19 years of working for a farmers cooperative, I’ve seen all types of farmers and ranchers. There have always been “weekend farmers” for whom farming is a lark, a small supplemental income or a tax write-off. Other herdsmen and planters have farming in their DNA. They yearn to be able to maintain farms handed down through generations and support their families SOLELY through the sweat of their brow in the croplands, pastures, orchards and dairy barns... -
So long, foods of my 1970s childhood
(Editorial ~ 03/02/18)
The Wall Street Journal article made me both hungry and wistful. According to The Journal, Aunt Jemima pancake mix, Campbell’s Soup, Kellogg’s cereals and many other “big-food” staples of the ‘70s are in trouble. “High-end consumers are shifting toward fresher items with fewer processed ingredients, while cost-conscious shoppers are buying inexpensive store brands,” reports The Journal...
