CMS Bulldogs Rip Liberty
With two minutes left to play in the first quarter, the CMS Bulldogs had the game well in-hand and cruised to a 29-13 win over the Patriots of Liberty.
Two plays into the contest Taylor Rodgers ran around the right end for a 58-yard touchdown and Carlos Guzman kicked through the extra for a quick 7-0 lead. The second play of the game for Liberty was a pass picked off by Cody Poarch who returned it 12-yards for the score and a 14-0 lead. Liberty went three and out on their next possession and Rodgers took the punt return 78 yards for a touchdown. Josh Pope tossed it into the end zone to Joe Stocstill for the two-point play and the Bulldogs held a 22-0 advantage with 2:05 left to play in the first.
The Bulldogs starters simply had too much for Liberty's first team and Coach Eric Crabtree spent the rest of the game coaching his second and third squads. Liberty took advantage to grab a score before the half when Trevor Jones tossed a halfback pass to Mitchell Hayt who traveled 49 yards for the touchdown to trim the lead to 22-7 at halftime. Jones proved the only bright spot for Liberty in the game as he later broke loose for an 87-yard touchdown run late to make it a 22-13 Bulldog lead. Rodgers needed only one more carry to make it a two touchdown final for the Bulldogs as he raced outside again for 65 yards and the game's final score.
Rodgers finished the game with two carries for 123 yards and two touchdowns plus a 78-yard punt return for a score. The only other big offensive play of the game came when QB Joe Stocstill connected with Spencer Gault for a 48-yard reception.
The defense for CMS saw a host of Bulldogs take the field as 29 players lined up against the Patriot offense with all but five registering a tackle, an assist or a turnover. Along with Poarch grabbing a pick and returning it for a score, Cameron Stewart came up with a fumble recovery for the Bulldogs. Patrick Lyle led in tackles with seven followed by Jonathan Douglas with six.
The Bulldogs will next travel to Columbia Academy for a big matchup to try and keep their unbeaten steak alive. Kickoff for the Sept. 7 battle is scheduled for 6 p.m.
