The Cornersville Bulldog's offense never got on-track while Wayne County produced enough big plays, to post a shutout win, 21-0 in rainy conditions Friday night in Waynesboro.
An 80-yard touchdown pass from Wayne County's Crease to Hanton on the Wildcat's first possession of the game, accounted for the only offensive fireworks in the first half. That play came at the 8:12 mark of the first period and with the point after, gave Wayne County a 7-0 lead.
The Bulldogs, who managed 164 yards of total offense compared to 276 yards total offense by Wayne County, often, seemed out of sync offensively. Although, giving up three touchdowns, all on big plays, it was the defense that played solid for Cornersville.
A blocked punt with 22 seconds left in the first half gave Wayne County an opportunity to put points on the board. From the Bulldog 32-yard line, the Wildcat's quarterback was picked-off in the end zone by Chuck Bassham.
Wayne County's opening drive of the second half ended when the Bulldog defense forced a turnover as Shelby Lowe recovered a fumble at the Wildcat 37-yard line.
The Bulldogs were unable to capitalize, turning the ball over on downs at nearly the same spot where Wayne County coughed-up the ball.
The Wildcats would make the most of their opportunity. On the first play from scrimmage, Butler scampered 30-yards on a quarterback keeper into Bulldog territory at the 35-yard line.Wayne County, behind its mammoth offensive line moved the ball to the 20-yard line before Bale broke through tacklers for the touchdown. With the extra point, Wayne County led 14-0 with 9:13 left in the third quarter.
It wouldn't take the Wildcats but three minutes to again put points on the board after Cornersville failed to reach the first down marker on fourth and 2-yards to go, deep in their own territory.
Once again, it was the defense, which otherwise held their own against the bigger Wayne County front-line, giving up a big-play, resulting in Wayne County's final score. Knowles went the distance from 20-yards out for the touchdown. The PAT gave the Wildcats their final margin of victory, 21-0.
Cornersville's most proficient drive of the night came on the Bulldog's next possession, but ran out of steam at the Wayne County 18 yard-line.
Casteel led the Bulldog's in rushing with 11 carries for 51 yards. Shelby Lowe was the leading receiver for Cornersville with two catches for 27 yards. Wayne County's Knowels led all rushers with 75 yards.
The Bulldogs once again travel through Wayne County this Friday night, taking on Collinwood in what Cornersville fans hope to be drier night and different outcome.
