Ruth Hunter Allen Furr

Ruth Hunter Allen Furr died Tuesday, October 17, 2006, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. She was born March 20, 1921, in the Berlin community of Marshall County, Tenn. She graduated from Marshall County High School in Lewisburg, Tenn. She received her B.S. from Middle Tennessee State University and her M.A. from the University of Mississippi. She taught music and elementary education for about 40 years in various schools in North Mississippi.
She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. She was active in the music programs of the church since a youth, both singing and playing instruments. An active member of the United Methodist Women, she served many offices both in local churches in the district and in the former North Mississippi Conference of the United Methodist Church. She served as the secretary of the first board of the Christian Social Concerns of the North Mississippi Conference of the United Methodist Church.
She was active in Federated Women's Club in Calhoun City and Booneville. She was a former member of the AAUW in Blue Mountain and Tupelo; a music club in Corinth; and the Fortnightly Musicale in Tupelo. In Tupelo she volunteered at the North Mississippi Behavioral Health and for Friends of the Lee County Library.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where she was a member of Wesley Fellowship Class, Older Adult Fellowship, Road Runners, Member Care Committee, the former Early Bird Choir and the Discovery Circle of the UMW.
A graveside service was held at Tupelo Memorial Park with the Rev. Shannon Johnston officiating. A Service of Death and Resurrection was held at the First United Methodist Church in Tupelo with the Rev. Andy Ray, the Rev. Raigan Miskelly and the Rev. Terri Armstrong officiating. A reception followed in the Gathering Room of the church. Holland-Harris Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband, E.S. Furr of Tupelo; one son, Stanley Allen "Stan" Furr and wife, Lynda Rowland-Furr, of Tupelo; one daughter, Anna Carol Furr and husband, Cecil Terry Dexter, of Jackson; one sister-in-law, Catherine Allen of Lewisburg, Tenn.; two cousins, Sara Jones and Margaret Jordan of Lewisburg, Tenn.; three nephews, two nieces, four great-nephews, three great-nieces; two stepgrandchildren, six stepgreat-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ruth Hunter and William Harris Allen, and two brothers, Thomas Hunter Allen and Harry Hunter Allen.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Wesley Sunday School Class and the Discovery Circle of the UMW.
