Mrs. Thelma Dial Bigger

Mrs. Thelma Dial Bigger, age 93, of North Augusta, South Carolina, died Tuesday, November 7, 2006 in South Carolina.
Mrs. Bigger was a native of Brunswick, Georgia and lived in Chattanooga, TN before moving to Anniston, AL where she was employed at the Anniston Star from 1956 until 1976 as a proof reader. In 1993, she moved to North Augusta, South Carolina following the death of her husband, John F. Bigger, Sr.
Mrs. Bigger was very active in the community in which she lived. She served on many boards and received many awards for her dedicated service. Her accomplishments include: President of the Anniston Council of Parents and Teachers, served on the Calhoun County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Board, Anniston Park and Recreation Board, Coosa Valley Regional Juvenile Center Board, Calhoun County Department of Human Resources, State President of Parents Anonymous of Alabama, Social Work Advisory Board at Jacksonville State University, Alabama Community Education Advisory Council, Alabama Child Welfare Committee, Anniston Junior Service League and served on the Board of Second Chance Agency to prevent domestic violence. In addition, Mrs. Bigger was awarded the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services award for leadership in the Prevention of Child Abuse and was named United Volunteer of the Year in 1992.
Following her move to North Augusta, she founded GEMS, a program of mentoring students, for which she received the Aiken County Senior Volunteer of the Year Award in 1997.
Mrs. Bigger was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Anniston, AL and served as an Elder and representative to Interfaith Ministries.
She is survived by a son, John F. Bigger, M.D. and wife, Carolyn of North Augusta, SC; daughter, Linda B. Shonesy, Ph.D. and husband, Michael, of Huntsville, AL; grandchildren, Rev. William J. Bigger and Wife, Leigh, Atlanta, GA, Robert S. Bigger and wife, Mary Anne, North Augusta, SC, David L. Bigger, North Augusta, SC, Amy M. Shonesy, Huntsville, AL, Brian Shonesy, Huntsville, AL; Step-grandchildren, Robert H. Bell III and wife, Mary Alice, North Augusta, SC, Carolyn B. Harper and husband, Mark, Acworth, GA; great grandchildren, Matthew Bigger, Kaylee Bigger, Bronwyn Bigger, Sarah Bigger, Rett Harper, Will Harper and Alli Bell.
Graveside services will be conducted Friday, November 10, 2006 at 12:00 noon at Swanson Cemetery in Chapel Hill with Rev. William J. Bigger officiating. Burial will follow in Swanson Cemetery. A memorial service will be conducted Monday, November 13, 2006 at 4:00 p.m. at Fairview Presbyterian Church with Dr. Robert Fuller officiating.
