The band, under the direction of Mr. Billy Bateman, not only placed second in a field of 24 bands from across the state, but was the only band rated superior in all four categories of Field Commander, Color Guard, Percussion, and Band.The band had placed in the top ten finalist for the last six years, but this is their highest award so far.
In the preliminary performances, the Band of Blue received the highest overall score in the Field Commander category, and second overall in Color Guard. Their show this year featured music from the motion picture Pirates of the Caribbean, played with dramatic flair and highlighted by the showmanship of the color gurard and pit musicians.

The band is also collecting inkjet cartridges, laser cartridges, and cell phones for fundraising purposes. These may be dropped off in the collection box at Breeze-in Market in Chapel Hill.
