One man's trash is another man's treasure

Wednesday, April 25, 2007

Westhills Elementary School physical education teachers Pam London and Jeremy Qualls are pseudo garbage persons these days, and their WES students are benefiting from this secondary profession. But it's not actual garbage they are collecting; these PE teachers are obtaining secondhand exercise equipment destined for the landfill to use in their classes.

To add to their daily plans in promoting physical education, whenever London or Qualls sees a piece of exercise equipment placed at the curb for garbage pickup, they confiscate it for their school. They'll clean it up, make sure it's in safe "running" condition, then place it in the gym for their excited students.

Of course it's not only "trashed" equipment the teachers seek; they also accept donations of gently used equipment from kind citizens.

So far the two have collected several exercise bikes, a couple of treadmills, and some steppers.

If you plan to discard a piece of exercise equipment, don't take it to a convenience center or the landfill; give the PE teachers at Westhills Elementary Scho-ol a call at 359-3909. They will be more than happy to take it off your hands.
