The Chapel Hill native and graduate of Forrest High School joined the Navy in 2006 after discussions with his grandfather, Gene Helms, who was also in the Navy.
He studied his trade as a Seabee "builder" in Gulfport, Mississippi, before being deployed to Kuwait as a member of the Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 133.
Their mission was the construction of integral parts of the base at which they were stationed. While there, Helms earned several prestigious awards and medals for his work including Sailor of the Quarter.
"After the blistering sandstorms and unspeakable heat, Mikey will be returning to the United States on Aug. 5 and home to Chapel Hill on Aug, 13," said his grandmother Rena Ann Helms.
