Cornersville continued its trend of using their running game to grind down opponents for a 33-0 victory over Perry County on Friday night. The Bulldog offense took advantage of seven different runners to gain almost 250 yards on the ground while quarterback Chuck Bassom completed four of six passes -- all to Shelby Lowe -- for 43 yards and one touchdown.
The Defense of the 'Dawgs wasn't kind to the home team, holding Perry County to less than 100 yards of total offense. The defense also held Perry County scoreless and got on the scoreboard themselves with a fumble recovery and return for a touchdown.
Cornersville jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter when Bassom hooked up with Lowe for a nine-yard TD pass. John Brewer put the extra point through the uprights for the 7 -- 0 lead.
Neither team put any more points on the board in the first half, but the Bulldogs would explode for 26 points in the second.
Bulldogs run away in the second half
Kyle Hammack got the scoring started for Cornersville in the second half with a 29-yard TD run. Hammack handled the ball eight times in the game for 54 yards. The extra point was good and the Dogs led 14-0.
The ground game continued to work and A.J. Smith carried the ball into the end zone for Cornersville on a 42-yard run. Smith was another major contributor in the rushing attack, carrying the ball 12 times for 91 yards and two touchdowns. The extra point attempt failed, but by the end of the third quarter the visitors had increased their lead to 20 -- 0.
The defense got into the scoring act next when Dylan Jones scooped up a fumbled and raced 68 yards into the end zone. When the extra point split the uprights the Dogs had built a 27-point lead.
Also instrumental in putting up the huge rushing numbers were Taylor Rogers, 10 carries for 86 yards; Josh Pope, 2 carries for 32 yards; Justin McCord; Josh Polly and Hammack. Smith put the exclamation point on the victory with his second touchdown of the day on a five-yard run. The Bulldogs cruised to the 33 -- 0 win.
