Elks honor fallen warriors' families

The Lewisburg Elks Club on Sunday honored the families of three Marshall County warriors who died while fighting for security here and against insurgents in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Receiving the Medal of Valor were relatives of Todd Edward Nunes, David Hierholzer and Marcus Andrew Golczynski. The medal is a new gesture this year by the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.

"It's to let them know that the Elks organization is thinking of them and praying for them," said Carl Griffis, a member of BPOE Lodge No. 1990.

Lodge member Bryant Boger said, "We all have a tender spot in our heart for our soldiers. Our lives have been changed by 9/11. We realize we can be hit in our own country."

Todd Nunes' mother, Barbara Nunes of Chapel Hill, received the medal from Boger who made the presentations. Nunes was the first Marshall Countian killed in the conflict in Iraq.

David Hierholzer's mother, Christine Hierholzer of Liberty Valley Road, Belfast, and his sister, Melony Osborn of Woods Avenue, Lewisburg, received the Medal of Valor in the Elks Lodge. David was the second warrior from this county who was killed in the war on...
