Death of a soldier among top stories

Friday, December 28, 2007

A casualty of war, crimes and a firing may be remembered as the top three news stories in Marshall County during 2007.

U.S. Marine Staff Sgt. Marc Golczynski was killed in Faluja, Iraq, last spring. Mary and Terry Foster died as a result of a murder-suicide in their business on Mooresville Highway in the summer. And shortly after school started, it was clear John David Pierce was soon to become the former director of Marshall County Schools.

Drought conditions continue here and elsewhere, but free water distribution ended last weekend when the last of three distribution places was shut down, leaving three to four families turning to other sources for water.

Doug Alexander's negotiated transfer from being Lewisburg's police chief to sergeant didn't affect as many people as the former director of schools who'd worked for the system for three decades.

Alexander eventually stepped down, as did Cpl. John Christmas. Other city police officers' stories also made headlines, but they were more of the same: A department adrift that's now to get advice from a new panel of civilians.
