Lady Rockets one win from title

Dakota Wesson drains a wide open three-pointer for the Lady Rockets who rolled to an easy 59-37 win over Community.

Senior point guard Dakota Wesson is as steady as they come, not flashy, just solid all the way around and she enjoys a great defensive effort like the one she and her teammates handed to the Community Viqueens on Tuesday night.

"We were pressing from the start, we came prepared to play", said Wesson in the post-game interview. "We have been working hard on our defense in practice to get ready for what is coming up. We all know that great defense wins games."

"Hopefully, we can play like we did tonight from now on", said the battle tested guard.

Forrest (20-3, 9-0), ranked sixth in the latest AP Poll released Monday, obliterated Community with a swarming defense and a well oiled offense to jump out to a 9-0 start, holding the Viqueens scoreless for the first four minutes and thirty one seconds of the first quarter.

The Lady Rockets put the game away with an 18-3 lead after the first period and cruised home to an easy 59-37 victory that leaves them just one win away from clinching their third consecutive District 9A title.

Forrest will wear the regular season crown with a win over the Middle Tennessee Christian School Lady Cougars tonight in Chapel Hill at 6:00pm.

It was never really a game after the big first quarter by the Lady Rockets as they stretched the lead to twenty-nine points by the half to 39-10.

Forrest Head Coach Robby Reasonover played his starters for the first three minutes of the third quarter and then sat them next to him the rest of the contest.

Forrest's second and third teams are good, good enough to not miss a beat and they did not, holding the lead at twenty-seven after three periods and cruising home for the win in Unionville.

Asked about the chances of clinching the regular season title on Friday versus MTCS, Wesson said, "I am just glad we are playing them at home because it is tough to beat them at their place."

Gaby Bussell led the Lady Rockets in scoring with 11 points, Beth Hawn had 10, Summer Waggoner 9, Randi Tombs 7, Ayla Young 5, Kensie McKee 4, Wesson and Thea Ledbetter each had 3, Canaan Rains, Shelby Stinnett, and Alyssa Gugger had 2, and Taylour Allen 1.
