Representatives of both sides of the dispute raging over the quarries near Chapel Hill were present at the Board of Zoning Appeals meeting Tuesday evening.
Andrew Hoover, attorney for "Marshall County Residents for Responsible Zoning LLC" said his clients were appealing any action of Marshall County that permits a quarry in a rural area. They maintain that the zoning should not have been changed and a special use permit should not have been given to Marshall County Stone.
In particular, residents are upset by the frequent blasting, which they believe threatens the groundwater. But they don't like the noise, dust and traffic the quarry generates either. "These are environmentally sensitive issues in a rural area," said Hoover.
