Joseph R. Dockery

Mr. Joseph R. "Joe" Dockery, 71, of Chapel Hill, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2008, after an extended illness.

Mr. Dockery was a native of Douglas, Ga. and served in the Army as a member of the Old Guard. He walked guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. He was a deacon, trustee, Sunday school teacher, and choir member at Smyrna Baptist Church, Chapel Hill. Mr. Dockery was a lifelong businessman, primarily in the automotive repair industry. He was active in numerous charitable organizations and participated in mission work in India, Alaska, and Brazil. He also raised horses and cattle.

He was preceded in death by his parents, David C. Dockery and Lucille Dockery Traynham; brother, J. D. Dockery; and sister, Doris Singleton.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sylvia H. Dockery of Chapel Hill; daughters, Cindy (Rusty) Perkins and Kristi (Brad) Herrera, both of Murfreesboro, Debra Holzem of Dallas, Texas, and Sherri (Hardy) Burch of Nashville; brother, Kenneth Dockery of San Antonio, Texas; 13 grandchildren; and 11 nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at Smyrna Baptist Church, Chapel Hill, from noon until the funeral at 1 p.m., Friday, Feb. 29. Rev. Roger Best will officiate, and burial will follow in Swanson Cemetery, Chapel Hill.

Family members will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be deacons of Smyrna Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Asian Indian Ministries, Inc. of Norcross, Ga. or to the Smyrna Baptist Church Building Fund.
