1,000 homes getting carts

Wednesday, March 19, 2008

The Recycling Committee here is proceeding with the purchase of 1,000 recycling carts for use at households in the southwest part of town during a pilot program starting this spring.

Otto Environmental Systems of Charlotte, N.C., was found to be the low bidder for the carts. They're large green rubber-like plastic barrels with two wheels, a handle and a lid. Recyclable paper, metal and plastic are to be placed in the carts for pickup on Wednesdays starting April 23.

Otto is being paid $30,350 for the carts that include an identification tag to help officials track participation so decisions may be made on whether to deliver incentives such as coupons for discounts at sponsors' shops, according to discussion among committee members on Friday.

"The bids came in lower than we expected," County Solid Waste Director Morgan Thomas said as the committee meeting started in Lewisburg City Hall.
