A major step toward approval of a landfill near Cornersville has been delayed.
Marshall County's land use zoning resolution says applications to rezone property for a landfill can't be filed until after county commissioners agree that the proposed landfill operator will meet state standards for operating a landfill.
"That will put the burden on the county commissioners," Commissioner Larry McKnight said. "They won't be able to say the planning commission recommended the rezoning."
Now, the zoning process has been delayed nearly a month.
The situation developed as follows.
One week ago today, Waste Management Inc.'s business development director, Robert Cheney, asked Don Nelson, the county's zoning administrator, to schedule the rezoning request for this month's meeting of the planning commission.
