Applicants seek to fill empty seats

Friday, April 4, 2008

Three people have applied to succeed two men who resigned from elected office and left seats open on the Marshall County Commission and the Lewisburg City Council.

Georgann Blackburn and Jimmy Wolaver of Cornersville want to succeed Sam Smith on the County Commission and Jeff Ellis is asking the City Council to appoint him to succeed Elvin White.

There's at least one other potential candidate for the open seat on the commission. He's Jackey King of Ebenezer Hollow Road in Cornersville. King picked up a petition to be signed by at least 25 registered voters and filed yesterday.

Smith and White resigned last month. The interim commissioner selected by the County Commission on April 28 to succeed Smith will be appointed to serve until Sept. 1. The interim councilman's appointment is until a winner in the May 2009 city election is sworn in.
