Lady Bulldogs lose to Richland Raiders
ulldogs (8-5, 4-1 District) suffered their first District loss of the season Tuesday, dropping a 6-2 decision to the Richland Lady Raiders at home. Cornersville held a 2-0 lead through the first four innings of play, but the Lady Raiders took advantage of a couple of defensive lapses by CHS and pushed across six runs over the next two frames to pull out the victory. With Richland starting hurler Leslie Tinnon struggling with her control at times, the Lady Bulldogs had numerous scoring opportunities in the contest, slapping out six hits and drawing six walks to go along with a pair of hit batsmen and two Lady Raider errors. CHS failed to make Tinnon pay more often than not, though, and left 11 women on base overall, while hitting into two double plays due to base running mistakes.
"When we hit the ball, we hit it right at people and we seemed to play with the mentality that we weren't facing someone as good as us," said Cornersville head coach Spencer Mitchell. "Usually when we hit the ball hard it falls in for a hit and our base runners got used to just taking off."
Third baseman Lori Beth Adams led the Lady Bulldogs at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles and 2 RBIs. Shortstop Tori Wolaver, starting pitcher Summer Cole, catcher Amanda Griggs, and second baseman Erica Blackwell each had a hit for Cornersville as well.
Cole suffered the loss in the circle for CHS, allowing five runs on three hits and five walks over 4 1/3 innings to go along with six strikeouts. Savannah Cole came on in relief and registered three strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings of work while yielding one run on two hits.
