Earth Day in Lewisburg was marked by distribution of containers for recyclable paper, plastic and metal in neighborhoods on the southwest side of town.

Other events surrounding the April 22 observance included a recycling service kickoff party Saturday attended by 78 people, on-going negotiations with Waste Management Inc. over the prospect of a new landfill contract, and completion of the distribution of the bins.

Some Marshall County schools' students on spring break were among the volunteers delivering the bins, one of which was welcomed at 1640 Orange St. by Shelly Bizub.

"I usually take recyclables down to the recycling place that's open on Wednesdays and Saturdays," Bizub said. "This makes it more convenient instead of taking it."
