Wolaver sworn in as commissioner

Marshall County Commissioner Jimmy Wolaver, left, takes the oath of office as administered by County Mayor Joe Boyd Liggett.

Former County Commissioner Jimmy Wolaver was appointed Monday to return to the panel as Sam Smith's successor since the Cornersville farmer resigned to avoid a conflict of interest over plans to sell property for a landfill.

Wolaver was appointed by a vote of 11-5 against Cornersville Planning Commissioner Georgann Blackburn, the only other candidate considered by the County Commission during its regular monthly meeting in the Courthouse Annex.

Both were gracious after the vote. Wolaver thanked the commission and promised to make decisions that are in the best interest of the county. He also acknowledged Blackburn as a worthy opponent. She later commented that she feels more suited as a planning commissioner. Blackburn was a Giles County planning commissioner before moving back across the county line and into Cornersville.
