Landfill comments: 110 against, 0 for

Friday, May 2, 2008

With a Monday deadline looming for public comments on a landfill proposed at Cornersville, more than 110 letters have been received at County Mayor Joe Boyd Liggett's office.

"Not one" endorses Waste Management's plan for 595 acres on the west side of Pulaski Highway between downtown Cornersville and The Tennessean Truck Stop, according to Linda Mulliniks, Liggett's administrative assistant.

One letter with a solution to the conflict between the need for a place to put trash and residents' opposition to a local replacement for Cedar Ridge Landfill -- set to close when full in a few years, came from 8-year-old Laramie Plott.

"I just finished a page of a magazine telling about making T-shirts out of plastic Coke bottles," Laramie wrote. "Is there anything we can do to keep the landfill out of our county?"
