Lady Rockets advance
It is one and done if you lose. You just have to get a win anyway you can to advance in the opening round of region play.
The Forrest Lady Rockets (30-6) found a way to win Monday. They got some help from Houston County, who committed some key errors at crucial moments. Forrest took advantage, winning 7-1 to advance to the Region 5A final versus East Robertson tonight in Chapel Hill at 7 p.m.
The prize for the winner of tonight's game is not only a region trophy, but a sub-State game at home Friday night, while the loser will go on the road.
"We did get some help tonight from Houston County," said FHS Head Coach Becky Cheatham after the contest, "but you have to put the ball in play to get those breaks and we did that."
The Lady Irish broke in front in the top of the second when Laken Black singled to center and came all the way around on the next play after Forrest misjudged an outfield fly to right by Cassie Holland for a three-base error.
In the bottom of the inning, Gaby Bussell nailed a leadoff single to right. A sacrifice bunt by Rachel Curtis moved Bussell to second and Bequi Bussell beat out an infield hit to put runners on first and third. Bequi Bussell stole second on the next pitch and after a lineout to short, Chelsea Johnson scorched one down the line, beating the throw for an infield hit and an RBI.
The game would go to the fourth inning, when the floodgates opened for the Lady Rockets. They scored two runs on one hit and three errors by the Houston County third baseman to lead 3-1.
That would be all that Forrest hurler Shelby Stinnett would need as the sophomore bore down the rest of the way, allowing just one more base runner the entire game.
The Lady Rockets got two more runs in the fifth to swell the lead to 5-1 on back to back squeeze bunt RBI's by Bequi Bussell and Amanda Daughrity.
Two more insurance runs in the sixth made the score 7-1 and Stinnett finished the deal, sending the Lady Rockets to a showdown versus the East Robertson Lady Indians (28-9), a team Forrest lost to last year, 7-3, in the region final in Cross Plains.
