A return trip to the state tournament was on the line Monday at Columbia Academy in the Region 6A/AA final for the dynamic doubles duo of Lyssa Wiles and Jenna Branaman, and as head coach Dickie Adkins put it after the game, "They played with the heart of champions."
What more can be said for a team that goes down 0-5 in last week's District Tournament, comes back to win, helps secure the district team championship with a crucial doubles win, goes down 0-5 once more to Mt. Pleasant in the first set of Monday's opening regional round, storms back to win, and then caps it off with an incredible three set (6-4, 1-6, 7-6) (7-2) come-from-behind tie-breaker win to advance to the Spring Fling next week in Murfreesboro.
Branaman, a quarterfinalist in singles last year, took the place of MCHS great Tori Richardson this year and said after the title match, "We should have gotten down on ourselves, but for some reason we did not. We got fired up and did it."
