Shelton named to City Council
pointed a new councilwoman.
Betsy Carothers Shelton of Fourth Avenue was named to succeed former Councilman Ronald Robinson, who served only 28 days after his appointment to succeed Elvin White. Federal rules prevented Robinson from being a councilman while working as the executive director of Lewisburg's Housing Authority.
Shelton is retired after 20 years in the human resources office of the CKNA plant, formerly known as Kantus Corp.
She was one of three people who applied in a second round of applicants after White resigned in March. She is to serve the unexpired portion of Robinson's term. Shelton said she plans to run in the city election on the second Tuesday of May 2009.
Councilmen Hershel Davis, Phil Sanders and Robin Minor voted for Shelton. Councilwoman Quinn Brandon voted for Jeff Ellis, another of the applicants who applied since Robinson resigned. The other applicant was Willie B. Mayberry. Questions had been raised before the special called Council session on Tuesday as to whether Mayberry had met the residency requirement of six months in the 3rd Ward.
