Chapel Hill park board appointments anticipated

CHAPEL HILL -- Appointments to the town's Park and Recreation Board are anticipated Monday night when the Board of Mayor and Aldermen may hear public comment on its property tax rate.

"There are now, technically, 10 seats on the park board, but there are only four members serving, so there are six to be appointed," Town Administrator Mike Hatten said Wednesday, adding that Mayor Carl Cooper makes the appointments.

Membership on the Park and Recreation Board has become more important recently because residents apparently want to improve the town's park land with more soccer fields and a baseball complex, Hatten said.

Meanwhile, the town has announced -- as required by state law -- that it intends to continue to fund its budget with the property tax rate that's been in effect for several years before property reappraisal was being conducted by the county assessor a couple of years ago.
