Liggett Street tutoring participants honored
The children of Liggett Street Church of God's tutoring program were honored Saturday, May 31, for their commitment to their education.
More than 20 students received gift bags donated by Wal-Mart, Sanford Corporation, Moon Products, Food Lion and Kroger. Parents received gifts from ABS Beauty Supply, Avon distributor Ann Tears, and Home Interior distributor Ivory Alexander.
A special thank you to our Community Cares Partner, Marshall County Tribune, for publishing information about our program.
Executive Director of the Lewisburg Housing Authority Ronald Robinson was the guest speaker. He encouraged the children to reach the highest level of educational achievement possible. Robinson also said that the students should never allow adversity to stop them from reaching their goals.
Late last year, Karen Olayinka began working with all of the members of the church, under the leadership of Deacon George Peacock, to develop a tutoring program specifically designed for the children of our community.
Church members have embraced faithful students with a hot meal, homework help, spiritual enrichment, games, clothing, hair styling, and parental assistance with school officials and teachers.
The entire Lewisburg community has joined as a village to help raise these loving children. Grocery stores, restaurants, teachers and citizens have offered money, food, services and discounts to make our children stronger and more productive citizens.
We will continue to support any and all children in our community as long as Jesus Christ allows.
The Liggett Street Church of God Tutoring Program will hold summer enrichment classes from 6 to 8 p.m. every Wednesday starting June 11. Activities will include required summer reading, corresponding with the school system, field trips, spiritual lessons, and vacation Bible school (June 30 - July 1), plus snacks, educational prizes and games for children.
Contact Karen Olayinka at 931-797-9235 for registration information.
