"There's a percussion instrument for every society in the world," he points out. "Other than voice, it's the instrument you can find in every society."
Almost as an after thought, he adds, "Anything you hit, I'll play."
Watkins has been hitting things since he was "really little" and started playing in the school band in fifth grade. By the time he was in high school in Petersburg, Ill., he was getting lessons from both classical percussionists and rock drummers.
