Marshall County residents apparently want to have a referendum on landfill issues, according to one county commissioner who spoke up Monday at a meeting that saw another new commissioner appointed.
Amid new and renewed controversy over garbage disposal, Doug Martin, a member of the county's Board of Zoning Appeals, was appointed to succeed Jennifer Harris as the 5th District Commissioner. Harris resigned. Martin was supported by 12 of the 16 commissioners present.
Commissioner Scotty Poarch raised the landfill referendum idea after Solid Waste Committee Chairman Don Ledford obtained release of County Attorney Lee Bowles' records on landfill correspondence between herself and Waste Management Inc.
