A Lewisburg couple has been raising heroes here for a couple of decades as volunteers for the non-profit organization Leader Dogs for the Blind.

"We've raised 17 puppies here in Tennessee and two in Michigan," says Elaine Berkheiser of Cornersville Highway who moved here in 1989 with her husband John because of his job with General Motors.

The volunteer work has been personally rewarding for some simple reasons, but one stands out; "I love dogs," she said.

There's that simple reward of unconditional love from a warm puppy, plus the knowledge that what they're doing is important on a daily basis for people who are blind and may also be deaf.
