Police officer nearly run down

Wednesday, November 19, 2008

A Lewisburg police officer had to jump out of the way to avoid injury this weekend when a suspect reversed his vehicle towards her.

Arrested and charged with aggravated assault on a police officer and evading arrest was 41-year-old Domingo Jimenez Gomez of Woodlawn Ave., Lewisburg.

Officer Denise Savage, 35, responded to the report of a car leaving the scene of an accident at about 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 15. The vehicle was described as a Honda with tinted windows, last seen heading towards Nashville Highway. As Savage wrote in her report, "I made contact with a vehicle, matching that description, at Nashville Hwy and Highway 50. I initiated a traffic stop."

The driver failed to stop and continued onto Old Lane Road and into the rear parking lot of Mexico Lindo, the report continues. By this time officer Kevin Clark of the Lewisburg Police Department and Deputy Lindsey Cook of the Marshall County Sheriff's office had arrived to assist. They surrounded the Honda on three sides and the car came to a stop.

Savage's report recounts what happened next. "I exited my patrol unit and approached the vehicle. Offender started the vehicle in motion forward; I attempted to return to my patrol unit as I ordered the offender to stop. Offender did place his vehicle in reverse, accelerated in motion and directed his vehicle towards the officer. I had to physically jump out of the way to avoid serious injury. I drew my service weapon and ordered the offender to stop. Offender stopped the vehicle two inches from the front of my patrol unit. Prior to the stop, this officer was in fear of imminent bodily harm."

Gomez was booked into Marshall County Jail and his bond was set at $10,500, but he made bond and was out of jail less than two hours later. His first court appearance is set for Monday, Dec. 1.

The car Gomez was driving was a beige 1997 Honda Accord with a Tennessee temporary tag. It had "front end damage" at the time of his arrest. Officer Savage's report does not indicate that Gomez has either a social security number or a driver's license. The arrest/booking report shows his last known employer as Mexico Lindo.
