Jury convicts man in thefts

Wednesday, March 4, 2009

A Marshall County jury convicted a Lewisburg man last week on charges that he stole a trailer, freezer and refrigerator, and then sold the kitchen appliances last fall.

Sidney Leonard Pigg III, 46, of 925 Verona Ave., was arrested Sept. 19 after telling Lewisburg Police Detective Sgt. Jimmy Oliver that he bought the trailer and appliances from William Davis.

Davis was transported by order of Judge Robert Crigler from a state prison to the Circuit Courtroom here where he testified for the state.

Pigg is scheduled for sentencing on April 8 by Crigler who presided over Pigg's trial on Feb. 25.

Oliver wrote in Pigg's arrest warrant that the defendant took the trailer, refrigerator and freezer from Fernando Hernandez. An interpreter was paid by the state for Hernandez's testimony. Pigg was indicted on Oct. 22. The indictment says the thefts were on Sept. 18.

The jury verdict form shows that Pigg was found guilty as charged: theft of property valued at between $1,000 and $10,000. Records alleged that he sold the freezer for $40 and that he claimed to have purchased the trailer for $25.
