Earlene Denton Smith

Earlene Denton Smith, 85, of Lewisburg, died Friday, March 13, 2009, at Village Manor.

Mrs. Smith was born in Winter Garden, Fla., but moved to the Culleoka Community with her parents and graduated from Culleoka High School. After working in Chattanooga as bookkeeper for Dr. John Hoover for two and a half years she returned to Maury County where she took nurses' training at King's Daughters Hospital School of Nursing in Columbia. She later moved to Lewisburg to pursue her nursing career at Wheat, Brown, Gordon, Leonard, and Taylor Hospitals. Mrs. Smith retired in good health and became a full-time homemaker and loved working in crafts and crocheting.

She was a life-time member of the Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl Thomas Denton and Esther Barrett Martin Denton; husband of 60 years, George O. Smith; and sister, Thelma Tallent.

She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia (Mike) Haislip of Culleoka; grandchildren, Tracie Lynn (Justin) Foster of Spring Hill and Nathan Alden Haislip of Knoxville; sister, Ozella Dugger of Culleoka; brother, Ralph Thomas Denton of Jupiter, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, March 16, from the chapel of Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with John Vaughan officiating, followed by burial in Bryant Cemetery in the Mooresville Community.

Active pallbearers were Tony Dugger, Troy Dugger, Lewis McConnell, Larry Speight, Tommy Tallent, Joe Foster, and Doug Burton. Bill Holly and Lyndal Fagan served as honorary pallbearers.

Meredith Lavoy Short

Meredith Lavoy "Buck" Short, 67, of Lewisburg, died Tuesday, March 18, 2009, at his residence.

Mr. Short was a native of Marshall County. He was retired from Faber-Castell as a security guard and was a member of the Westvue Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Granville Dyer and Merle Nelms Short, and wife, Eula Mai Harvill Short.

He is survived by his son, Jeffrey D. Short of Chapel Hill; daughters, Kimberly M. Chunn and Annette Short, both of Lewisburg; sisters, Lavonne Lowrance of Cornersville and Faylene McCollum of Lewisburg; grandson, Thomas Lee Chunn; adopted grandson, Hunter Morgan Haislip; stepgranddaughters, Ashley and Kelsey Marquis; stepgreat-granddaughter, Rayne Marquis; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, March 20, from the chapel of London Funeral Home, followed by burial in the Short Cemetery.

The family will be at London Funeral Home Friday until the funeral hour for visitation.
