Forrest Middle ends season with wild win

Wednesday, April 1, 2009

The Forrest Middle School Lady Rockets had their backs up against the wall versus E. A. Cox in a Southern Middle School Conference play-in game Friday , but came away victorious on a two-out, two-run, pinch hit in the bottom of the 7th inning by Kaitlin Ladd for an 8-7 win.

The remainder of the tournament, scheduled to be played Saturday was cancelled because of rain and will not be made-up.

Cox scored one in the top of the first on an RBI single Krystin King.

The game went to the bottom of the second where FMS took a 2-1 lead. Mandi Conley ripped a one-out single, Charlie Bruce walked, and both runners scored when the Cox first-baseman threw wildly to third after Spencer Walls grounded into a 4-3 fielder's choice.

Sara Jordan was strong in the circle for FMS after three innings and her club put up three more runs in the bottom of the third on an RBI by Jordan and a two-run ribbie by Conley for a 5-1 lead.

Cox exploded for seven runs in the top of the fourth with the big blow coming on a bases loaded triple by King.

FMS made it a one-run game, scoring a lone marker as Taylor Andrews crossed the dish on an unearned run in the bottom of the inning.

There was no scoring in the fifth or sixth innings.

Jordan was getting stronger as the game went on and the seventh grader struck out the first two Cox hitters in the seventh before giving up a single. Jordan sent the game to the bottom of the inning when she got Bailey Loveless on a pop-up, back to the circle.

Things looked bleak for FMS in their last at bat as the first two hitters went down on groundouts.

Jessica Harmon extended the ballgame with a pinch-hit double to right and Walls drew a 3-2 walk, putting runners on first and second.

Ladd came to the plate and with a 1-1 count, hitting a ball to the first base-second base hole that was picked up by the pitcher, who turned and threw the ball wildly over the head of the first baseman, allowing both Lady Rocket runners to score, ending the game.

"That was incredible," said a jubilant Ladd after the game. "I am really happy I did get a hit. I was super-nervous and just wanted to hit the ball. It was awesome!"
