Shooting trial past opening arguments

Friday, April 17, 2009

Opening arguments were completed by noon Thursday in the trial of a Marshall County man accused in the May 2008 shooting at a Lewisburg nightspot.

Jonathan Doran "JonJon" Tears, 29, of Seventh Avenue North was charged in the May 11 shooting of Gary Dejuan O'Neal, 27, of Monroe Street at the Soul Train Bar and Grille.

Assistant Public Defender Michael Collins said at noon yesterday that he anticipated his client's trial would continue today.

Marshall County Circuit Court Judge Robert Crigler is presiding over the trial. Assistant District Attorney Eddie Barnard is prosecuting.

Lewisburg Police Detective Jimmy Oliver led the investigation into O'Neal's shooting. He drove to Memphis to bring Tears back to Marshall County since the Lewisburg man was taken into custody by Memphis Police.

O'Neal suffered a gunshot wound that apparently entered his chest and exited his right side.
