Teen drowns in Duck River

CHAPEL HILL - A 16-year-old boy drowned in the Duck River on Thursday evening between a Henry Horton State Park boat ramp and the Nashville Highway bridge over the river.

Funeral services for Douglas Van Orden III of Lewisburg were held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 29, in the chapel at London Funeral Home. Burial followed in Whorley Cemetery, the mortuary said.

Van Orden entered the river from the north side shore of the river that borders the state park, according to Meg Lockhart, spokeswoman for the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.

Park rangers recovered the teen's body at 9:22 p.m., Lockhart said. Van Orden was with a cousin and younger brother when he waded too far from the shore, she said. Van Orden didn't know how to swim and the river current pulled him in.
