All nine schools to offer breakfast in 09-10

Friday, August 21, 2009

The Marshall County Food Service Department is proud to announce that all nine schools in Marshall County will be offering the national school breakfast program this school year. Forrest School started serving breakfast the first full day of school (Friday, August 7).

A healthy breakfast is an essential part of being prepared to learn. Studies consistently show that school breakfast helps students score higher on tests, increases attention span, and decreases absenteeism, tardiness, and visits to the nurse. Since school breakfast is required to contain one-fourth of the Recommended Daily Allowances for protein, calcium, iron, vitamin A and vitamin C, studies show that school breakfast eaters have higher nutritional intakes than non-school breakfast eaters.

With today's fast-paced lifestyle and tough economic times, it may be difficult for children to sit down to a balanced breakfast before heading off to school. We hope, with this new program, all students in Marshall County will take advantage of this affordable program. Breakfast will be offered every morning for $1.10; parents/guardians are invited to eat breakfast with their children.
