A Petersburg woman died and her twin sister was injured in a single-car accident in the early hours Saturday.

Melody A. Whitaker, 25, of Gingerbread Road, Petersburg, was killed when the car in which she was riding crashed into a utility pole and burst into flames on North Ellington Parkway, Lewisburg.

Amberly L. Robinson, 25, of the same address, was driving her sister's 2009 Pontiac G6 southbound on North Ellington Parkway at about 3 a.m Saturday, Nov. 14, when the car crossed both northbound lanes and crashed into a utility pole opposite the Lewisburg Gas Department.

Robinson told Lewisburg Police Department Officer Jackie Sands "that she had fallen asleep while driving." A witness to the crash stated that "the driver never attempted to brake," and police found no skid marks on the road.

When officers arrived at the scene they removed both women from the burning car. Emergency Medical Services personnel pronounced Whitaker dead at the scene.

Robinson was transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center by Air Evac helicopter.

Sands' report states "neither alcohol or drugs" were present, according to his observation, but blood samples were drawn from both women.
