Lawrence is Chapel Hill Citizen of the Year

Garrett Lawrence is the 2009 Chapel Hill Citizen of the Year.

Known as a successful entrepreneur, visionary, leader, loving father and husband, Lawrence loved fishing and worked hard at whatever was put in front of him. He graduated from Forrest High School in 1941 and attended Gupton-Jones Mortuary School in Nashville. After completing his degree in 1943, he joined in with his brother in starting Lawrence Funeral Home.

Lawrence was also an alderman and a member of the board of directors for 42 years at First State Bank. Civic organizations include being a member of the Masonic lodge, where he holds a title of a 32nd Scottish Rite Mason, and also a Chapel Hill Lions Club member and one of the first charter members of the organization, and a recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award.

Lawrence is married to his wife, Kay, and has several children: Sue, Carolyn, Emily, Vivan and Garry, and a host of grandchildren.
