Obituary: Virginia Ruth Sawyers Hastings

Virginia Ruth Sawyers Hastings, 90, of Petersburg, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 2009, at her residence.

Mrs. Hastings was a native of Lincoln County. She was a member of the Catalpa Church of Christ for 70 years. Mrs. Hastings was a newspaper correspondent for the Lewisburg Tribune (later the Marshall County Tribune) for 64 years. As a homemaker, Mrs. Hastings prepared canned goods for the public for over 30 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George Sawyers and Leoda Pamplin Sawyers; husband, Doyle Hastings; daughter, Rhonda Ruth Hastings; six brothers; and two sisters.

She is survived by her daughters, Janice Harris of Belfast and Doylene Hastings of Petersburg; sisters-in-law, Verna Sawyers and Avis Sawyers; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Dec. 29, from the chapel of Bills-McGaugh Funeral Home with Edwin Carpenter, Don Hudson, and Tom Sumners officiating. Burial followed in Talley Cemetery in the Cane Creek Community near Petersburg.

The men of Catalpa Church of Christ and nephews served as honorary pallbearers.
