Hershel Elmer Bivens, 95, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010, at Standing Stone Care and Rehabilitation Center in Monterey, Tenn.
Mr. Bivens, fondly known as "Mr. Elmer" or "Mr. B.," was a native of Hardin County. In 1943, he and his wife moved to Friendship and began a series of businesses. Mr. Bivens sat on the boards of many local, state and national telecommunication associations and served as mayor of Friendship and chairman of the Board of Education for Crockett County. He was active and in the Friendship United Methodist Church and served as both elder and Sunday School superintendent.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dudley and Anna Newman Bivens, and wife, Thalia Pugh Bivens.
He is survived by his sons, Herbert R. (Rena) Bivens of Chapel Hill and Thomas E. (Donna) Bivens of Medina; daughter, Anneta B. (Allan) Deal of Crossville; sister, Sue La Muska of Jackson; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Jan. 23, at Friendship United Methodist Church with Rev. Craig Myrick and Rev. Ben Stillwell-Hernandez officiating, followed by burial in Friendship Cemetery.
