Obituary: Ruth P. Mitchell

Ruth P. Mitchell, 89, died Monday, April 19, 2010, in Birmingham, Ala., after a brief illness.

Mrs. Mitchell graduated from Forrest High School in Chapel Hill and from Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro. She taught in the Madison County Alabama School system for 32 years.

Mrs. Mitchell lived in Madison County and Huntsville, Ala. from 1941-2005 and in Hoover, Ala. from 2005 until her death. She and her husband were members of Trinity United Methodist Church in Huntsville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon C. Mitchell of Huntsville, Ala.; her parents, Aurora R. and Milton T. Powell of Chapel Hill; and by her siblings, James M. Powell of Frederick, Md., Mary P. Cheek of Lewisburg, and Clarence A. Powell of Chapel Hill.

Mrs. Mitchell is survived by her son, Dr. Bob Mitchell and her daughter-in-law, Paula Hultquist Mitchell, of Hoover, Ala.; her grandson, Bob Mitchell, her granddaughter-in-law, Jennifer Glaze Mitchell; and great-grandchildren, Sara Chandler and Hughes Mitchell, all of Mountain Brook, Ala. Mrs. Mitchell is also survived by her sister-in-law, Nancy Maxwell Powell, and her niece, Nanette Powell Todd, of Chapel Hill.

A visitation will be held at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home, 2701 John Hawkins Parkway, Hoover, Ala., at noon Wednesday, April 21. Funeral services will begin immediately thereafter at 1 p.m. Following the service, Mrs. Mitchell will be interred with her husband at Currie-Jefferson Memorial Gardens.

The pallbearers will be Andrew Todd, Brian Todd, Hunter Todd, Adam Todd and Ira Todd, all of Chapel Hill, and Raymond Morris of Huntsville.

The family is very appreciative of the recent care provided to Mrs. Mitchell by the staff at St. Vincent's Hospital in Birmingham and by her physician, Dr. James M. Gewin.
