Jury selection set today in assault trial

Wednesday, May 26, 2010

Jury selection was scheduled to start today in the trial of one of two Marshall County men who are charged with assaulting a Lewisburg man.

Philip J. Venable Jr. and Billy Jack Knight allegedly assaulted Danny J. King on Aug. 15 in the Jackson Trailer Park, public records show. King suffered two black eyes, a possible concussion and facial cuts.

Knight and Venable were indicted by the grand jury on aggravated assault charges in November. Attorney David McKenzie was appointed to represent Knight, while Venable's case was given to the Public Defender's Office.

Knight's trial was to start today, McKenzie said Tuesday afternoon.

Knight's case was sent to the grand jury after a preliminary hearing conducted by Lewisburg City Court Judge Roger Brandon on Oct. 26. Subsequently, Venable was arrested. He waived his right to a preliminary hearing. Testimony at the preliminary hearing gave the judge probable cause to believe there was a crime and that Knight could be the culprit.
